These smart gadgets make it easy to access the internet anywhere, and this simplifies the way we get information.

  • Encourages Innovation And Creativity

Since technology seems infinite, it sparks the brain to work to its full potential. In the past, it used to be very difficult to start a business, one had to have lots of capital, and they even had limited access to business information. Today, it is simple to start a business while at home. Let’s look at companies like Etsy.com which enable creative people to sell their works online; this encourages creativity. Another good example is kickstarter.com which helps creative people get funds for their projects through crowdfunding. On this platform, creative developers post projects to seek funding from the community; this helps them generate capital for their ideas which later leads to the creation of new jobs and further innovation of technology. The other creative works which have been facilitated by modern technology include Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, etc

  • Improved Communication

Communication is like water to life; it is essential to growth, We can not progress without communication. Modern technology has blessed us with advanced communication technology tools. These include e-fax, electronic mail, mobile phones, video conferencing, instant text messaging applications, social networking, etc.. All these modern communication technology tools have simplified the way humans and businesses communicate. I can quickly talk to my relative overseas using a mobile phone or video chatting services like Skype.

  • The Convenience Of Traveling/ Ease Of Mobility

Modern transportation technology makes it very easy to travel long distances. Transport is a very important both in our lives and in the business world. Transportation technology has evolved with years. In the past, it used to be slow and expensive to move long distances. Nowadays, we can cover a 10 miles distance within a few minutes using electric trains, airplanes or cars.

  • Improved Housing And Lifestyle

Another excellent way how modern technology has simplified our lives. If you compare the type of housing we used in 1900 and the architecture of houses today, the difference is enormous. New architectural technology has improved the kinds of home we build. People with money can afford floating homes, and glass homes or people with smaller means can make tiny houses or mobile homes. Most of the items in our houses are now automated, for example, doors use fingerprints, key cards, or Bluetooth on our mobile. Security has also increased at home with the evolution of more robust integrated security system.

Today most hospitals have implemented modern technology in surgical rooms, and this has reduced mistakes made by doctors. Humans can easily make mistakes because of work overload and stress factors. Additionally, the development community has developed health apps that enable us to monitor our health, weight or fitness. These applications are used on mobile phones, so users have access anytime

Why does Christmas in the Philippines start in September?

Nations all have a way of marking the start of the Christmas season around the world. In the United States, the holidays officially begin on Thanksgiving in November while in Italy, a fellow Catholic country, decorations are only put up on December 8th or the day of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

In the Philippines, the Christmas season kicks off on September 1st or the start of the so-called ‘BER months’ – more than three months before the actual Christmas day. Christmas songs start playing on the radio and in the malls, holiday promos from airlines pop up, invitations from friends and family to get together and eat out start coming in, and Christmas trees, balls, and lights now occupy every department store’s racks – literally overnight.

We grew up practicing this tradition but where did it really all start? Whoever said we should start celebrating Christmas in September?

You might think it’s because we, Filipinos, are mostly Catholic. It’s one possible reason but according to sociologist, Bro. Clifford Sorita, if we look at the Liturgical Calendar, the Advent season or the preparation for the Nativity of Jesus Christ begins four Sundays before Christmas day which is around the last week of November or early December.

Is there a particular event in history that started this tradition? After much research, no one can say, said Bro. Sorita. It was just something that was practiced in Filipino households even before there were Jose Mari Chan and Mariah Carey memes announcing the first of September on social media. We have always been festive and we like grabbing the opportunities to come together as a family to enjoy a generous spread of food on the table.

How to make HTML

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Text Editor
  • An Internet Browser
  • Completed Unit 1 of Codecademy’s Learn HTML & CSS course

When you navigate to a web page on the Internet, the browser is doing a lot of work. The browser reads all the necessary files (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) and interprets those raw resources to paint the complex page you see.

In this article, you’ll learn how to create a web page using a text editor on your own computer, then view the web page in your browser. If you’re interested in publishing your web page to the World Wide Web (the Internet) for everyone to see, check out this article after you understand the steps below.

STEP 1: OPEN YOUR TEXT EDITOR

The first step is to open your text editor. It’s important to use a “raw” text editor, and not a formatted word processor.

Word processors insert characters which make the page look good, but aren’t valid HTML. They’re great tools for making stylish documents, such as academic papers and flyers, but they also insert characters that aren’t valid HTML. Since a web page file must contain valid HTML, a text editor is a better tool than a word processor for building web pages.

STEP 2: WRITE YOUR HTML SKELETON

Now that your text editor is open, you can begin writing your HTML. As you learned in the first lesson of the HTML & CSS course, there are a few things that are always present in a well-formatted HTML file. Here’s all of them together again:

You can use this exact skeleton if you like. Just copy and paste it into your text editor. Make sure you include everything!

STEP 3: SAVE YOUR FILE

Your web page is now ready, but currently it only exists inside of your text editor. The next step is to save the file to your computer. If you closed the text editor now without saving, your new web page would be lost! There are a few important things to keep in mind when you save it the file:

  1. Use the .html HTML file extension, i.e. about_me.html
  2. Don’t use any spaces or special characters in the file name. Use underscores (_) or dashes (-) instead.
  3. Decide where in your computer you will save the file, and make sure to remember the location!
Use the .html HTML file extension

A file extension is the suffix of a file name, and describes the type of the file. The file extension is always the last 3 or 4 characters in a filename, preceded by a period. For example, the HTML file extension is .html, and it tells the browser (and other applications) to interpret the contents of the file as a web page. Note that on older web pages you may see .htm, but this archaic and no longer used.

Don’t use any spaces or special characters in the file name

When choosing a file name, keep it simple. Stick to numbers and letters. Use underscores (_) or dashes (-) instead of spaces. Leave out percent signs, slashes, question marks, exclamation points, commas, and other “special characters”. The browser needs to locate the file based on its name, and special characters within the file name can interrupt that process. File names should be kept simple and should follow conventions in order to make navigating to your web page more reliable.

Decide where in your computer you will save the file

After choosing a file name, select an appropriate location in your file system to save your web page. It’s good practice to create a new folder to house this web page. If you do create a new folder, use the same naming conventions outlined above in order to minimize future headaches. The most important thing when selecting the location to save to is to remember where you saved it. If you saved it already but you don’t remember where, just click File > Save As..., choose a new location to save, and be sure to remember this time.

STEP 4: OPEN YOUR WEB PAGE IN YOUR BROWSER

Now you’re ready to view your new page in your browser! First, open up your browser. In the top menu, click File > Open File. Navigate to the location you saved your web page. Click on your web page file and then click Open. You should see your web page!

REVIEW

In this short time you learned how to take what you’re learning on Codecademy and use it on your own personal computer. You also learned about file extensions, text editors, and saving and viewing local files. Now you are prepared to test out anything you learn in Codecademy for yourself, and practice on your own!

Why Philippines Prone to Typhoon

Devastating typhoons such as Super Typhoon Haiyan, which slammed into the Philippines on Friday, are common for the area, weather experts say.

Haiyan is the fourth typhoon to hit the Philippines this year and the third Category 5 typhoon to make landfall in the Philippines since 2010, says meteorologist Jeff Masters of the Weather Underground.

Just last year, Super Typhoon Bopha killed more than 1,900 people in the Philippines when it hit on Dec. 3, and ended up as the most destructive typhoon (in terms of property damage) in Philippine history.

There have been at least ten typhoons that have resulted in at least 1,000 deaths over the course of the past few centuries in the Philippines, said Weather Underground weather historian Christopher Burt.

“The Philippines lie in the most tropical cyclone-prone waters on Earth, and rarely escape a year without experiencing a devastating typhoon,” Masters said.

STORY: Haiyan leaves death, destruction in its wake

A tropical cyclone is an all-encompassing term that includes typhoons, hurricanes, and cyclones, which have different names depending on where they form.

Since 1970, the Philippines has been hit by more tropical cyclones than any country on earth except for China, according to the National Hurricane Center.

On average, about 30 tropical cyclones form in the western Pacific Ocean each year, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center reports.

According to data from the warning center, an October record of seven typhoons developed in the western Pacific Ocean last month.

That doesn’t include Cyclone Phailin, which became the strongest system to make landfall in India since 1999, coming ashore in the eastern state of Odisha in October and killing at least 44 people.

Storms that form in the Indian Ocean — a separate “basin” from the Western Pacific — are known as cyclones.

How Does Drug Affect Your Grades

According to NIDA, the brain relies on chemicals called neurotransmitters to get messages from one part of the brain to the other. Each neurotransmitter attaches to its own kind of receptor—like how a key fits into a lock. This allows messages to travel through the brain on the right path. When you use drugs, it interferes with the normal traffic patterns that the neurotransmitters use. The chemical structure in the drugs can imitate and fool the receptors, lock on to them and alter the activity of the nerve cells. This “alteration” can result in messages going in the wrong direction, and reset the way your brain should act or react.

Ultimately this affects the way your brain processes and retains information—and how you think, learn, remember, focus, and concentrate.

Research shows that there is a definite link between teen substance abuse and how well you do in school. Teens who abuse drugs have lower grades, a higher rate of absence from school and other activities, and an increased potential for dropping out of school.

Although we all know or hear stories about people who use drugs and still get great grades, this is not typical. Most people who use drugs regularly don’t consistently do well in school.

Studies show that marijuana, for example, affects your attention, memory, and ability to learn. Its effects can last for days or weeks after the drug wears off. So, if you are smoking marijuana daily, you are not functioning at your best.

Students who smoke marijuanatend to get lower grades and are more likely to drop out of high school. One recent marijuana study showed that heavy marijuana use in your teen years and continued into adulthood can reduce your IQ up to as much as 8 points

President Rodrigo Duterte signed the first tax reform package, also known as the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN), into law on Dec. 19, 2017.The TRAIN Law exempted minimum wage earners from paying personal income tax, broadened the tax base, and increased excise taxes. The implementation of TRAIN is expected to generate P130 billion in government revenues, which will be used for the Duterte administration’s Build, Build, Build infrastructure development program. Our economy is currently not in its best state. In April, inflation reached 4.5 percent. Despite the good intention of the tax reform, we cannot deny that many Filipino consumers suffer from continuously increasing prices of basic commodities. In a recent meeting of the Congressional Oversight Committee on the Comprehensive Tax Reform Program, the Bureau of Internal Revenue reported that in the first quarter of the year, the excise tax collection increased, particularly in petroleum products, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverages. In terms of personal income tax, the BIR was behind their target of P83.53 billion, as they collected only P60.18 billion. When asked by the Committee on how the Executive can cushion the negative impact of the TRAIN Law, the Department of Finance said that P12.3 billion was released for the conditional cash transfer program under the Department of Social Welfare and Development from January to April this year.

Santo Niño de tondo Church History

The district of Tondo, Manila, once the center of the ancient Pre-Hispanic Kingdom of Manila and later to be known, notoriously, as the poverty stricken district as portrayed in the media, either in film, print and television (in television series and even in the news) which is very contrary to what the district really is in real life and the most populated district in Manila, is known to have one of the most valuable treasure and their beloved King – the venerable image of Señor Santo Niño de Tondo, the most beloved and longest reigning heir of the ancient kingdom of Raja Lakandula.
The image of Santo Niño de Tondo is one of the most celebrated images of the Child Jesus in the Philippines and considered as the second oldest venerated image of the Child Jesus in the Philippines, next to Santo Niño de Cebu. His church is also known as one of the most visited in the country – considering the large populace of Tondo aside from pilgrims from other parts of Manila and around the country who flock the church to venerate the King of Tondo.
The well loved image of Santo Niño de Tondo is presented as a Royal Ruler sporting a crown, a scepter and the globus cruciger standing in a tall peaña (base or platform of the image). The image of the Santo Niño de Tondo is a de vestir image where the image is vested with richly embroidered vestments or oftentimes his signature silver plancha y capa. The head, hands and feet of the image is that of carefully carved ivory and the face of the Child Jesus has a peculiar feature of showing his teeth as if he is smiling to the beholder. The image has its own set of jewels from crowns, scepters, the globus cruciger, atochas (the jewel in the forehead of the image which signifies his divinity) and boots.

Another distinction of the image is the hairdo that the image sport. The image sport a wavy coiffed hairdo which is somehow reminiscent of the Renaissance period where such hairstyle is commonly seen which somehow added to the Royal stature the image implies.
